This weekend, the 22nd LGBTQ Film Festival will continue at the Natural History Museum in Balboa Park. The festival includes several international films. The three-day Sycuan Powwow also starts today in El Cajon. It should be wonderous! The classic film Casablanca will be shown at Cinema Under the Stars this weekend.
Today (Friday) at the Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego, the exhibit A Penny, for What It’s Worth featuring works by artist Yaw Owusu opens. The exhibit will continue until the end of November. The Digital Gym as part of the German Currents Kino (film theater) series will screen Coup with additional screenings on the following Sunday and Wednesday. At the California Center for the Arts, the Manny Cepeda Orchestra Quartet will perform. At the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living in Encinitas, Indian classical vocalist T. M. Krishna will perform in concert with Akkarai Subhalakshmi on violin and Praveen Sparsh on mridangam.
Saturday and Sunday, the annual Cardiff by the Sea Greek Festival will take place at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church.
Saturday, the House of Korea will hold its annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages. The 1st Annual USS Midway Birthday & Multi-Cultural Celebration will take place aboard the aircraft carrier and will feature numerous international dance and music groups. The Spanish tragicomedy The Good Boss (El Buen Patrón) will be screened at the Digital Gym with repeat screenings on the following Monday and Thursday. Mexican group Los Ángeles Azules, who specialize in Cumbia Sonidera music, will perform at the Viejas Arena. Iranian singer Moein will perform at the Balboa Theatre.
Sunday, on the lawn next to the new ComicCon Museum in Balboa Park, there will be a Dandiya Celebration sponsored by the House of India. There will be a Lucha Libre (masked Mexican wrestling) event in Oceanside. What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank opens at the Old Globe.
Monday, the world music concert series returns to SDSU. The first concert in the series will be by the Donob Collective, a multi-cultural, multi-generational collective of musicians who've been playing Iranian music(s) in San Diego since 1984. At the Central Library, there will be a talk entitled: We Are Not Strangers Here: African Americans in Rural California.
Tuesday, Icelandic singer-songwriter Laufey will perform at the House of Blues.
Thursday, at the Royal India in Mira Mesa, the World Affairs Council will host a talk with Professor Richard Feinberg who will discuss the impact of the current administration's policies. The San Diego Italian Film Festival will screen the film Loose Cannons (Mine Vaganti) at La Paloma. The screening will be in honor of their former Executive Director, the wonderful Victor Laruccia, who, sadly, passed away earlier this year. Thursday evening the film biopic Selena will be shown at the Hyatt. Operatic quartet Il Divo will perform at Humphreys.
Next Friday and Saturday, a Chicano Beer and Music Fest will take place in Vista.
Next Friday in Balbo Park (at the Organ Pavilion), the Mexican Independence Day Grito and Concert will feature performances by Grupo Ellas, Mariachi Estrellas de Chula Vista, and Ballet Folklorico La Fiesta Danzantes de San Diego.
Next Saturday and Sunday, the annual Viking Fest will take place in Vista.
Next Saturday at City Heights/Weingart Branch Library, there will be a Mariachi Fest with a generous number of groups performing. The Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park will host a Mexican Independence Day Celebration. GRAMMY-award winning Arturo O'Farri and his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra will perform at the Rady Shell. Japanese rock band Chai will perform at the House of Blues. Also at the House of Blues, Mexican rapper Alemán will perform. Mexican singer-songwriter and accordionist Christian Nodal who specializes in Norteño and Mariachi music will perform at Pechanga Arena.
Next Sunday, the House of Germany will hold their annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages. The House of France will hold a Summer Picnic at Sunset Point Park.
Cross-cultural/international-themed theatrical offerings in San Diego include Cabaret at the Cygnet Theatre in Old Town and Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical at the Old Globe's Shiley Stage. As mentioned above, What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank opens Sunday at the Old Globe's Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre.
